Chapter Ten

After breakfast, Allyse shooed her girls back to their room, then ran back upstairs to the bathroom and closed the door. She hurriedly dumped out her morning dose of pills and swallowed them, grimacing at the bitter taste of reality before washing it down with a sip of tepid sink water.

The row of orange pill bottles sat there, staring back at her indifferently, eyeless and soulless, yet too much of a necessity for her to discard. Kat and Steph didn’t know about the pills, they didn’t know about the heart problems or why she was really “on vacation”. They only knew that their mother had finally torn herself away from work to come here, and that Dani, a woman they had only heard about from stories…was here, too.

Allyse slammed the medicine cabinet door shut and scowled at her reflection. Her life was starting to sound like the plot to one of those irritatingly saccharin-sweet rom-coms that came out like clockwork every summer. She could see it now. Overworked big city executive gets tired of it all, leaves the city to save themselves, only to find love in the arms of a tall, mysterious cowboy.

Only she wasn’t tired of her job, not entirely. She loved working in the industry, even if she missed the best part of it…designing. It had been years since she put down her pencils to wield a corporate pen because apparently you couldn’t do both and stay sane. Besides, it wasn’t like coming here was her own idea, it wasn’t. Without Erick’s interference she’d still be in New York, behind her desk, and taking care of business as usual.

Or in the hospital.

Allyse pushed that thought as far down as she could push it, then straightened up, glaring at the mirror for exposing a truth. She stood tall, chin up, her expression smooth and hard at the same time. She was Allyse DeLeon, dammit…a woman who did not and would not take crap from anyone, not even herself. This little mini pity party was beneath her. Nothing had ever stopped her from getting what she wanted, and she didn’t plan on changing anytime soon.
